Ken Marschall's Art of Titanic
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion (October, 1998)
Authors: Ken Marschall, Rick Archbold, and James Cameron
Average review score:

Beautiful renderings of Marschall's familiar Titanic art
Perhaps last on the Titanic bandwagon is this beautiful picture book of Ken Marschall's paintings. Marschall is not only the premiere painter of this great ship [and other ships as well] but, in his introduction, James Cameron admits that he was inspired to make his film by a desire to do on film what Marschall had been doing for years on canvas. Many of the paintings in this "Art of" book will be familiar to Titanic fans, especially ones who have read "Titanic: an Illustrated History" by Don Lynch, with paintings by Marschall. This book, however, focuses on the artwork of Marschall rather than being a re-telling of the Titanic story, and, in some cases the reproductions of the pictures are larger than you have seen them before [in others such as the Titanic cut away, the opposite is true]. The commentary on each picture, and the information on the artist's life is interesting as well, but you have to be a real fan to want this, in addition to "Illustrated History..." IT does include several excellent pictures of other ships including the Mauretania, Olympic, Lusitania for ship fans. Although the book mentions Marschall's motion picture matte paintings and shows a couple of examples, it doesn't really deal with that aspect of Marschall's art sufficiently, nor does it deal with his non-ship art [including his paintings of The Hindenberg]. This is a beautiful picture book if you are interested in ship art, if you are interested in details on the Titanic read "Illustrated History..."

The finest Titanic pictures anywhere, all in one deluxe book
Having been a"Titanic Buff" since 1969, I never then could have imagined that someday I would have in my hands these absolutely breathtaking views of Titanic,so many, one better than the next, and all in one volume. It is one of my dreams come true.Ken is very gifted, and anyone interested in Titanic, would be thrilled to have this in their collection. I would like to say to Ken,if he should ever read this:"Thank you for bringing Titanic back to life."Go buy this book...it is one you will look at for years to come......Tom Smith

A Must for Any Titanic Library
I discovered this wonderful book at a Titanic Historical Society convention and it is one of my most prized possessions of all my books on the subject. Ken Marschall is not only a foremost Titanic historian, but a maritime artist of great talent. Like many, he fell in love with Titanic legend as a child and his passion for art soon combined with his passion for the "unsinkable" ship. This book is a presentation of his love, from art he did as a young boy, to his later paintings. There is art of Titanic in her moments of grand triumph when she was the "ship of dreams" -- and then heartwrenching ones of her in her final moments that freezing April night. We see detailed, haunting Marschall works of how she is now in a watery grave, based on photographs taken by Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the wreck site in 1985. Near the book's end, however, is one of my favorite Marschall drawings, one of a scene that never happened, a beautiful Titanic entering New York harbor as her maiden voyage ends. This alone is worth the price of this magnificent book that belongs in any Titanic buff's library.

Very Good! Definitely Read!
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. I bought this book last night and I finshed it just a little while ago. I couldn't put it down. If you enjoy romance, history, some action, and even a little mystery, you will LOVE this book. I also recomended the other books in this series.

The Best in the Series!
When I first read Katherine, I fell in love with the series, but for some reason it took me a year to finally buy the other three. I read Charlotte and was a little disappointed, and I was begining to worry that the others might not be as great. Boy was I wrong! To be honest, I thought Stephanie was going to be a bad plot and all, but I couldn't put the book down! It is my favorite of the whole series. Carrie wasn't quite as good (about as good as Charlotte). I would strongly recomend this book to anyone who likes historical romances! It is one of the best books of its kind!

GREAT BOOK!
This is a great book! This book is my FAVORITE out of all of the Hearts nd Dreams series. It is worth the read. In the beggining she is all snotty, selfish, and inconsideret but by the end of the book she has changed SO much it's incredible! Ms. Dokey really has out done herself in this book. I've read other books of hers and this one is on my top list. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars but I can't. :-( BOO! Don't miss this exciting book about apperences and finding true love in the least expected places. Happy reading!
P.S. You wouldn't BELIEVE the ending! It's really surprising!

Mastering Network Security
Published in Paperback by Sybex (07 October, 2002)
Authors: Chris Brenton and Cameron Hunt
Average review score:

A great book for securing your network
I've read "Maximum Security: A Hacker's Guide" and have to say I like this book better. A Hacker's Guide is great if you are a script kiddie looking to infiltrate or crash other people's systems. This book however is for the rest of us who need to secure those systems from being compromised. The focus of this book is on securing networks, not launching exploits. The content and quality is excellent. The text is extremely easy to follow.

Excellent introduction to Network Security
Mr. Brenton does a good job of giving the uninitiated a good starting point in network security. The majority of his examples are NT-based (which is good because the majority of the people reading this are going to be NT-centric as well) but he also gives some excellent insight into NetWare and UNIX/LINUX as well. Although I was looking for something a bit more advanced, I thought that this book was an excellent book to begin the long road of network security with.

Great Book, Very Complete
This is a very cool book. The first couple of chapters contain a lot of ammunition that can be used to justify extra $$$ for securing your environment.

The book then gets into how all the pieces of a network fit together. I thought this was a little odd for a security book but found it much easier to follow the later material than I have with other books. The author lays down a great foundation so that its much easier to follow the higher end stuff like locking down a particular operating system and why certain steps are important.

This book is definitely one to keep handy long after its been read!

The Weekend

A Touching Book
I read this book in High School (which makes it a good 3-5 years ago), and I don't remember the book exactly, but I was really touched by it. I even copied down a whole paragraph from it because it was so profound. Part of it is "There are things you lose you do not get back. You cannot have them ever again, except in the smudging of a carbon copy of memory." I originally chose it because I believe it was summer, and I wanted a small, short-ish book to read. It was new in the library, so I checked it out. I don't know how many people read these recommendations, but I highly recommend it if you like touching, realistic stories.

People are Funny
I just saw the movie adaptation of this novel and it was everything I hoped it would be. This was one of the first gay-themed novels I read after coming out and I will always remember the sharp dialogue and spare prose. The funny thing is it is unfair to label this "gay" fiction because it is such an incredible character study of many different types of people. Read the book, then hope you get a chance to see the movie with great performances by Gena Rowlands, Brooke Shields, and David Conrad.

A Small Surprise
This is a very strange, quiet and unsettling book that I would recommend reading. It's like reading a foreign film: minimal plot, GREAT character development and lines that seem to jump off the page at you. And, after it's all said and done, you kinda feel like hugging the book. A definite read!

Sportbike Performance Handbook
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (April, 1998)
Author: Kevin Cameron
Average review score:

Outstanding information but poor organization.
The book cuts through the ridiculous claims made by many aftermarket parts companies. It covers pratically every performance modification you can make to your bike, listing the advantages and disadvantages of each. By far, the best part of the book is that it explains the "why?" behind the modifications so that you can make the best decision based on your individual riding skills/style. Firestone and Ford should read the section on tire pressure!

A book for all motorcycycle riders.
This a book that nearly all riders can benefit from whether considering racing, street performance, maintenance, or just wondering about how all that machinery underneath us works. Kevin Cameron approaches each aspect of motorcycle performance with an explanation how that system works and how it interacts with you and the rest of the bike. This understanding of your bike's systems makes performance choices clearer and easier. Any mechanical modification or upgrade has its tradeoffs which Cameron make clear for every subject. But even without the need for "superbike" performance, understanding the inner workings of what you ride adds greatly to the experience. In reading this text it is clear that Mr. Cameron has considerable experience, education, training, enthusiam, and intuition into the workings of motorcycles. He is able to bring all of this into words for the enthusiast - without the need for an engineering degree.

If your the least bit interested in what makes it go read it
This book brings together all the fundamentals required to develop at least an intuitive understanding of not only how your sport bike works but why. This book pulls together all the vocabulary and theories you have heard over the years and explains them in basic language and basic mathematics. Kevin also clears up topics like high octane fuel and when it is necessary to run it. (Not for more HP! Like a lot of people think.)

If you have a sport bike you should read this book. After reading this book you will be ready for more in depth study or be prepaired to go out and knowledgably purchase parts and services.

Brain Longevity: The Breakthrough Medical Program That Improves Your Mind and Memory
Published in Digital by Warner Books ()
Authors: Dharma Singh Khalsa, Dharma S. Khalsa, and Cameron Stauth
Average review score:

Amazingly Insightful
Dr. Khalsa has some amazing insights into our health. He has confirmed for me the things I'm discovering about my body and the American health system. Before reading his book, I was already doing the majority of the things for his Brain Longevity Program, but found that even at 34 yrs old, I was starting to have some memory issues. As he vividly describes the functions of the brain, various body chemicals, I think my excessive exercise has caused high cortisol levels. I will integrate his medicinal tonics and mind/yogic exercises to complete the program and begin doing that within the next couple weeks. I'm looking forward to improving my memory, brain functions. I love his case studies where he gives examples of all walks of life. This book is very well-written!!!

Stimulating, Provocative Discussion of the Mind and Memory
I really enjoyed this book. Dr. Khalsa has a passion for his work that carries over into his writing. In straightforward fashion he moves from a very good discussion of how the brain works to a well organized plan for how anyone can employ nutritional, stress reduction, and exercise techniques as well as pharmacological therapies to prevent brain degeneration, optimize performance, and even reverse the course of such conditions as age related memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. I began reading this book to educate myself. I came away a "convert" to Dr. Khalsa's program. He convinced me to make some lifestyle changes that no doubt will enhance my overall well being and quality of life. I can think of no higher praise for a book than this

Hollistic approach to brain-care with Eastern influences
When I purchased this book, the first thing I wanted to do was zip ahead to Dr. Khalsa's program to improve cognition and read it first. However, the chapters that detailed his various patients' cases and the treatments they received were absorbing. The book also explains the various functions of the brain and its systems that, in turn, gave me a stronger reason to adhere to the programs that the doctor suggests. Not only does the book give good practical advice concerning nutrition and stress-management, but also excellent spiritual advice. It is a beautiful, well-rounded book that will lead its readers to a path of enlightenment. The interesting comparisons of Eastern thought to Western thought are interesting and are presented in a manner that everyone will appreciate. If you're over 40 and some of your memory seems to be slipping, I would certainly invest it this book.

Charmed by The Novel
Another entertaining episode that has the Charmed Ones operate in an enchanting field. This time it's ghosts from the 50's that can't get their peace until the mystery is solved. Having read all 10 Charmed-books that have been published so far (or that I know of), I must say that this is not the top-thriller because I did find the characters of Brett and Marjorie and Wendy a bit flat. That doesn't mean the book is not good, it's just that the others were better because their characters were more lively.

An Awesome Book
If you like Charmed, the show, you will love this book. I have read every charmed book besides the 2 new one's and this one was my favorite. Phoebe is doing a school project and she runs into ghosts that spirits haven't Rest In Peace yet. Phoebe has to figure out how to stop them before she and her partner are killed at the halloween party at college. The ghost that will kill them believe that they are his ex-girlfriend and friend. Really good book and I love it!

One of the Best books
This book is as interesting a read as the other five books in the Charmed Series. I like way the writer lets us know what Phoebe feels in the story. This book is very worth it and i would recommend it to everybody.

The Brewer Twins: Double Take
Published in Paperback by Universe Books (20 July, 1998)
Authors: Keith Brewer, Paul West, Jason Losser, Derek S. Brewer, and Cameron West
Average review score:

The Twins Could Have Done Much Better
The book is pretty boring. The text is lacking, and skips anything in depth about these twin dudes. The pictures could be so much better. They really skipped over the Joe Magazine affair of their lives. Too bad, as that was the best of the Brewer boys as far as I am concerned. It was real, and heartfelt - this book is not.

Mirror of Male Beauty
The Brewer Twins, Keith & Derek, would, each on his own, be among the most beautiful youths on the planet: it would be difficult to find anyone to match such perfection. But here we see this beauty mirrored - and more than just doubled. These are not just two exquisitely-formed guys who happen to be brothers: they are twins, with the shared intimacy that goes along with that. The striking point about most of the photos in this book is that their physical beauty is complemented and emphasized by the beauty of their friendship and fraternal love for each other. One does not simply admire their beauty: one cannot help but delight also in the sheer joy of seeing such closeness between two guys. We catch a glimpse of something very precious here, something that warms the heart as well as appealing to the eyes. Male beauty does not come better than this: these guys are the stuff of which the Greek myths of Adonis & Narcissus, Achilles & Ganymede are made - only the Greeks never imagined there could be two such fair youths. Buy it: you'll enjoy hours of pleasure gazing upon the beautiful Brewers - I know I have.

Blond and Yummy!
I have always liked the Brewer Twins. How fortunate they are to be blessed with such great looks. This book is for their fans - I for one. If you are a fan, or simply enjoy a double dose of yummy blondness, then this is the book for you.

Washington Avalanche, 1910
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Simon Pulse (01 March, 2000)
Author: Cameron Dokey
Average review score:

A Interesting read.
This book was very catchy. I read it in a day. It isn't one of those books that you read and it teaches you nothing. I had never really heard of the washington avalanche, so it was interesting to me and I learned something. The story was about a girl about to turn 18 named Virgina [called Ginny] and when she does turn 18, her brother has something horrible planned. She runs away from her step-brothers house a few months before she turns 18 to escape her cruel fate. When she get's on the train a girl about her own age helps her hide. They become friends and find out that they both have the same name! ginny's new friend is coming out west to marry a man she knows nothing about, but made a death bed promise that she would. ginny and Virgina decide to switch places, so Virginia can check out her fiance from a distance and Ginny can stay hidden from her brother. But when "Virginas" fiance arrives on board ginny is swept off her feet. The same with him! But ginny has to tell him the truth. But now the passengers on the train are threatened by the brutal snow storm and threatening avalanche. This was a great book. I was kinda disapointed on what ginny does in the end, but hey, what's a good book without a few mistakes?! Over all it was still good and I would recomend it.

A terrific series that is a "must read"!
I have enjoyed all of the books in this series so far. Washington Avalanche, 1910 is no exception. Two girls, both named Virginia, meet be chance on an ill-fated train ride through Washington state. Neither of them realize that the outcome of their meeting, and the results of a plan they hatch to disguise their real reasons for this train trip, will change their lives forever. This book is full of romance, history and sadness (this was a horrific accident in American history), but I found it enjoyable and a good read.

AMAZING! Held you interested the WHOLE time
This book was so amazing. I don't know why but one day at the library I saw a book called Stephanie: Heart of Gold....weird as I am I took it thinking a book with the same name as me would be good. I was hooked right after I read that book. I checked out more and more books by Cameron Dokey. She's an amazing writer...the romance she talks about it's so close to what teenagers face. This is definatly a young adult novel. It is mysterious, romantic, and also sad. Crying may be an option that will happen sooner or later. But it's worth reading it, the book is amazing.

Hitler's Table Talk
Published in Hardcover by Enigma Books (01 October, 2000)
Authors: Adolf Hitler, Norman Cameron, R. H. Stevens, Prof. Hugh Trevor-Roper, and Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper
Average review score:

Essential and informative
Henry Picker was a young German officer who knew stenography and took down Hitler's Table Talk for a period of four years during World War II. This book was first published in 1951 and has enjoyed many reprints in the intervening years. This edition is expertly translated and has some revealing footnotes which leads the reader to other sources.

Though Hitler is invariably portrayed as a raving madman in American "docudramas," he could also be a thoroughly charming and intensely charismatic private companion in his off hours. A man capable of seducing 65 million Germans and of his monumental crimes, had to possess an elemental force both inexplicable and fascinating. This book provides some clues to Hitler's personality, though in fairness, his mesmerizing mystique had been dulled by drugs and megalomania by 1941. He was surrounded by sycophants, but there were some perceptive and intelligent people in his milieu, most notably Joseph Goebbels. Hitler's secretaries were also articulate and intelligent ladies. However, his chauffeurs and other aides, such as Linge and Schaub, were hardly junior Einstein's.

Hitler's monologues are faithfully presented here and he emerges as a genius in certain areas (his knowledge of architecture and art was encyclopedic), and as a sexist boor in other realms. His believed himself to be omniscient and believed further that he was a messiah selected by Providence to save the German nation. Anyone harboring such delusions is bound to sound arrogant and insufferable on occasion.

This is a must have book for anyone interested in Hitler, his entourage, or his paralyzing effect upon other people. It's chilling that Hitler casually discussed trivialities while Europe was being torn asunder because of one man's twsited ideology.

I couldn't put it down..
This is a rather large book, but I devoured it literally overnight. The intelligence Hitler displays in his conversations is almost overwhelming. Even his harshest critics cannot deny what a brilliant mind he had. A self-educated man, he possessed knowledge of a broad range of subjects, sometimes knowing even more about certain things than men who were educated at universities. Before I read this book, I knew he was smart. After having completed the book, I was convinced of his genius.
There are 3 books which I personally consider "essential reading" to students of Hitler's life. The first is an out-of-print masterpiece written by August Kubizek (and the fact that it is out of print in the USA is really an indicator of the general public's blissful ignorance when it comes to matters of the TRUTH about Hitler's early life). The second is "Mein Kampf". Last but not least is "Hitler's Table Talk". I also strongly suggest to all bilingual readers out there to read this book (entitled "Hitlers Tischgespraeche") in the original German, as Henry Picker offers some really insightful remarks on the Fuehrer as a person. Hitler's Table Talk promises not to disappoint!

A Little Knowledge Can Be a Dangerous Thing
I decided to buy this book after reading industry and reader commentary on it. The first thing that struck me was that these are not monologues as some have supposed, they are merely the record of what only Hitler said. The original purpose of their transcription was to save for posterity the words of the Fuehrer in order that they might see how wise he was. Far from being the vulgar parvenu that he is often portrayed, Hitler was a widely read self-educated man with an amazing grasp of many subjects. If this book were to be published without any reference to Jews, the war, the Nazi Party or to Hitler himself, most reasonable people of all political persuasions would find something in his words with which to heartily agree. Look at his pronouncements on economics, on the environment (he was an ecologist before most knew the term), on modernization, on culture, on being a vegetarian, on alcohol and even on smoking and you'll see that in today's America he would be seen as slightly center-left in most areas. Its the other things he said and did that left the world with the image of him as a monster. Despite his knowledge and insight, we all know that he did not use them to best advantage thus dragging his country and much of Europe into a shambles from which some parts have yet to recover. Read this book and you'll see that much of what he foresaw eventually came to pass: The dissolution of Jugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, the dismemberment of the British Empire, the push for a united Europe and even the loss of the war by the side that did not have access to adequate raw materials for its successful prosecution. Yes, Hitler tended to pontificate but as you read keep in mind that only his part of most conversations were being taken down. Read this book and you will also see the truth to the old adage that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.
